Banana companies in Colombia experience a high demand for their products internationally.
Colombia was the fifth largest banana exporter in the world in 2017, with a production of 98.4 million boxes of 20 kilos each. During 2019, 51.227 hectares of banana plantation were reported, 542 more than the previous year, making the country one of the largest producers of bananas in the world. Banana exports totaled USD 852.8 million with a total of 100.2 million boxes, generating employment for more than 140.000 people, according to the Banana Union (Association of Banana Producers of Colombia and Association of Banana Producers of Magdalena and Guajira).
The growth was noticeable in the northern region towards the areas of La Guajira and Cesar. The main consumer countries were Belgium with 22.7 million boxes, the United Kingdom with 17.7 million boxes, Italy with 13.6 million boxes, and the United States with 12.3 million boxes. In 2019, more than 80% of the banana produced in the country was for export purposes. The country produced 2,100,00 tons of bananas, of which 1,800,000 tons were destined for export and 300,000 tons for national consumption.
Banana products such as banana chips, fried bananas, green bananas, dehydrated bananas, and banana flour are some of the products that banana producers have developed to diversify the proposal of the fruit.
Other similar products such as plantain, fried plantains, sweet plantain, and green plantain are complementary products that are also appetized by the international market.
Colombia has much to offer in the agricultural sector. Banana is one of the most common and well-known products in the foreign market. It is fresh, of high quality, sweet taste, and low-cost.
