Sugar cane producers in Colombia are a very well build sector that has grown and developed over the last 60 years. Sugar is one of the great engines of the economy in Colombia. The country is ranked the 13th sugar cane producer among 91 other countries, making it one of the largest producers of sugar cane in the world, and it is part of the group of nations responsible for producing 80.5% of the sugar production worldwide.

In Colombia, sugarcane can be produced throughout the year, thanks to the region’s privileged climate. Sugar cane producers invest over USD 11.5million in technology every year and have reached important markets worldwide. The exports of sugar cane in Colombia grew by 5.9% in 2018 compared to the same period in 2017. It exported a volume of 748,000 tons, which generated US 330 million in foreign exchange for Colombia, according to Asocaña (Agroindustrial Sugarcane Sector) reports. Currently, the area of the country planted with sugar cane exceeds 232 thousand hectares, and it is mostly concentrated in Valle del Cauca, Cauca, Quindio, Risaralda, and Meta, and the industry generates around 290,000 jobs.
More than 60 countries in the world enjoy the quality of the four main types of sugar produced in the country, raw sugar, white sugar, special white sugar, and refined sugar. Also, products such as panela and sugar cane juice that are extracted from the sugar cane plant are highly produced and consumed throughout the country.
