Colombia Crafts Factory

The Colombian crafts factory is a pillar of the national economy, thanks to more than 350,000 people from all areas and ethnicities dedicated to different craft trades representing 15% of the manufacturing sector's occupation, of which 70% are exclusively devoted to this industry.

In the goal set by the government for the four years between 2015 and 2018, Colombian arts and crafts achieved by 105%. Moreover, the project to expand demographic coverage generated 7,539 beneficiaries, 1,700 beneficiaries of ethnic groups, and 910 beneficiaries.

During 2018 the artisans achieved an income of $ 26,974 MM derived from initiatives such as participation in fairs organized by Artesanías de Colombia ( A government institution responsible for the promotions and development of the country's artisanal and craft sector), in association with third parties, exhibition and promotion spaces, and facilitated income and business rounds.

Moreover, the Colombian government encourages artisans to use the intellectual property system to protect their creative works and obtain just remuneration for their efforts while also preserving the country's national patrimony for future generations.

Ambassador Clemencia Forero Ucros, Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations in Geneva, described Colombian crafts as the ultimate representation of its culture, idiosyncrasy, and folklore. She stressed the importance for a country like Colombia of "working hand-in-hand with WIPO for the protection of our cultural expressions."

Some examples of crafted Colombia's heritage are silverware, basketry, tapestry, ceramic plates, wood masks, and finely woven objects, produced in different regions and by a cross-section of indigenous groups.
